It'south if he knows his nursery rhymes.

Yup – those silly nonsense verses that take been around for centuries have a lot of value.

If a child tin can recite plant nursery rhymes, it's a good bet that he has a good grasp on rhyming, which is a super important skill for early readers.    In a previous post I shared vi reasons why rhyming matters.

Today I'grand sharing a gratis printable to help your child do this skill. Yay!

I created a prepare of 48 moving-picture show cards to utilize with my toddler and preschooler.  I started with my Two (he'll be turning three next month).  He has but started showing interest in doing more "sitting" activities with me, and he was excited to try this one.

Nosotros've done breezy rhyming activities before.  We read a lot of rhyming books, and we also play some rhyming games in the car.  But this was my Two'south first formal introduction to rhyming.  It sounded something similar this.

"Let's look at this picture.  Chip."

"Flake!"

Tin you find the word that rhymes?  Allow's read them.  Bit, transport.  Fleck, clock.  Bit, chick.   Which one rhymes?"

"Chick."

"No, that one doesn't sound the aforementioned at the cease.  How about this one… scrap, ship?"

"Chip, ship!"

Obviously, he did not learn to rhyme from this short activity.   That's totally fine!  The bespeak was not for him to suddenly grasp the concept; that will come.  But by doing a handful of cards together (we did about 10), he was able to go a get-go in hearing how words can sound the same.

Afterwards on, my Four was ready for a turn.  Rhyming tin can be difficult for some kids to pick upward, but he's always had an like shooting fish in a barrel time with it.  I think a lot has to practise with the fact that he loves the printable books of rhymes and songs I began making for him when he was two.  (Psst… yous can get those books for free here!)

In fact, afterwards near ten prune cards he started doing these in his head without reading the words aloud.  He didn't practise the entire stack – and I didn't expect him to (48 is a lot!).

These would work well as a classroom learning centre, for a busy bag at the doc's office, or an "I'g bored" activity when you lot're trying to go supper on the tabular array.  Accept fun with them!
